The path to success has one key factor…Motivation.
If you have the required motivation, together with perseverance, there is no doubt that you will be successful in whatever it is that you want to achieve. The only problem is, that it is not always possible to stay motivated.
Part of the journey to success is demotivation, despondency, and thoughts of giving up.
If you are in one of these stages then it is imperative to apply self-motivation. Well, what is self-motivation and how do I apply it?
Below, you’ll find my self-motivation tips and how to apply it.
1. Surround yourself with like-minded people
If you want to become successful in life, you have got to interact with people who has the same goals as you. Now, I’m not saying if you want to be a pro football player, you have to be friends with other people who also want to be football players.
No, I’m saying if you have the will to be successful in something, befriend yourself with other people who also have the passion for becoming successful.
If you are going to surround yourself with people who has no passion in life or no ambition to do better, then you will have no motivation to become more. This is not easy to hear, but it’s true.
I have a real passion for real estate investing and becoming financially free, and so do my friends. We don’t only talk about investing when we get together, but we motivate each other in a way that whenever we read a good article or see a great investment opportunity, we tell each other about it and listen to what the others think about it.
By being friends with them, we have also been able to buy a few properties together. Properties that I wouldn’t have been able to afford if I bought it on my own.
I would say, out of all my self-motivation tips, this one is probably the most important. Make friends with people that share your passion, and you will become successful.
2. Create your own motivation
How the heck do I do that, Cj?
Well, it’s easy. Think of the thing that motivates you to achieve your goal. Why do you want motivation? Why are you doing what you’re doing?
If you are training insanely hard, because you want to look fit and strong, then that is your motivation.
Me on the other hand, want to achieve financial freedom and become my own boss. What is my motivation then?
I get inspiration from people who have achieved what I want. I constantly read up on how they have overcome their hurdles and achieved their success. There are a lot of times where I feel so demotivated then all I do is check out their stories and in no time I am ready to get working on my goals.
Another great way I use to get my motivation up is, I go surfing or just chill on the beach. Whenever I’m at the beach, it’s like my thoughts get clear. I feel refreshed.
You should try and get a place where you can “recharge”. A place which makes you happy and makes you feel good. This can be anything from a mall, in the backyard of your house, hiking up a mountain, or anything else you can think of.
3. Get inspiration
This self-motivation tip links up with my previous tip.
Whatever it is that you want to achieve, chances are there was somebody before you that has already achieved it. This should be your inspiration. I always say you should “tap” into someone else’s knowledge.
By this I mean, learn from them as much as you can. Learn from their mistakes and what made them who they are today. This is a great way to stay motivated.
When you are struggling with a certain aspect during your journey, and you see that your “role model” struggled through that as well and you know he made it through. Then you know you can too. And best of all, you can use his methods and apply it to your own journey.
One of my biggest role models is Robert Kiyosaki. He is a property mogul, investor, and entrepreneur that have inspired millions of people. He is also the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad. If you have not read the book, I will definitely suggest it. It has changed my life forever.
4. Relax, take a break
It is very important to take time and unwind.
If you are going to work non-stop for weeks or months at a time, chances are very good that you will burn out. Yes, people aren’t made to work constantly without breaks.
In order to maintain motivation, try to organize weekends away, every now and then. Only you and your family (no work!). By doing this, you give your mind a rest and after the break, you will be able to think better and feel more refreshed.
You should also take time during the week where you do something fun. Something other than work.
Like I mentioned, I like to go surfing. This is where I recharge so that when I’m back, doing work, I feel much more motivated and focused.
5. Set goals
Try to set easy, short-term goals for yourself. By doing this, you will constantly stay motivated. Every time you achieve one of your goals, you will get the feeling that you succeeded in something. This feeling motivates you to keep on going.
It is important to set long-term goals as well as short-term goals.
If you only set long-term goals, it will take you too long to reach them and before you know it, you will give up, because you don’t get the constant feeling of success.
Muhammad Ali once said, “What keeps me going is goals.”
So you want to be successful? Then use my 5 self-motivation tips to your advantage.
If you can keep yourself motivated throughout your journey, I have no doubt that you will be successful. Whenever you feel like giving up, find that inspiration to carry you through. You won’t regret it.
Remember that, motivation is the key to success.
