What to Know When Choosing A Website Domain Name

If you are new to the whole building a website or blogging scene, then you’ve probably come across the part where you need to choose a domain name for your site. This can be a bit stressful because of the fact that this is the name for your website, the name, people that want to visit the site enter, in order to view your work.

If this is you, don’t worry. Seeing that you’ve come this far as to create a website, you most probably know what you want your site to be about, so choosing a website domain name will be easy for you.

Below are my tips and thoughts around domain names.

What is a domain name?

The simple answer to this question is, a domain name or web address is basically what people type into their browser to find whatever they are looking for. In my case, if people wanted to find my blog, they would simply type in the address that you see at the top and land on my page.

A very important thing to remember is that when you’ve registered your domain with a company like Blue Host then you don’t have a website yet. In order for you to have a website, you will need a host for your domain. A host can include WordPress, Blogger, etc.

KISS

You must be familiar with the term KISS (keep it simple, stupid). This is the first thing that you must remember when choosing a website domain name.

Just think about it. Imagine I want to go and search for a website that I’ve previously viewed and the name is something like iliketowtachbirdsflyinthewinter.com. This is way too long and complicated. The shorter you can get it, the better. The problem is just, most of the unique, short domain names are probably taken.

You have got to be creative while still keeping it simple.

Target your niche

If you don’t know what a niche is or how to choose it, simply click here to check out my previous post.

It is very important to make sure that your domain name has something to do with your niche. For instance, if you have a blog about healthy living make sure that your name describes your niche and don’t use a name that has to do with gadgets.

Make it catchy

This part links up with KISS. Try to think of something catchy that will stick. If you go and visit a website with a name that just sticks in your head, you are sure to be back on that site again. Why? because you’ll remember it easy.

The catchier it is, the better is your chances that people will be back.

Make use of keywords

The first thing I do before I even think of my website (when I start a new one) is, I sit for quite some time checking my keyword tool. There are a number of tools out there, but I prefer the Jaaxy tool. It is very user-friendly and really accurate.

By making your domain name SEO friendly you will get even more visitors to your site. If people are to type in your domain name in google for instance and you found a great keyword for your name, then your site will automatically pop up and they will enter.

This way, not only your posts are SEO friendly but your domain name is as well.

Try and find a .com domain

Now, this is just my opinion and a lot of people will have their own opinions. You get a whole lot of domain name extensions but we all know that .com are the most popular. You will also trust a website better if you see it is .com.

Nowadays there are a lot more new extensions that are getting popular, but if you’re starting a blog, I will suggest that you try and find a .com domain for your site.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when choosing a website domain name it should really not be that difficult. You’ve got your niche and you know what you want to do, so be creative and remember to KISS.

I really hope that I was able to help you and if I did, please don’t feel shy to share this post.
